Well, it’s finally time.
David and Bathsheba.
In many ways I fled from this moment. I started writing this series 15 years ago. I was a young man full of a genuine desire to put the stories of 1-2 Samuel on the radar for a group that had been largely abandoned by new waves of American evangelicalism: ordinary men.
Guys like plumbers, oil field workers, truckers, carpenters, railroaders, yes, but also doctors, lawyers, and executives. White collar uniting with blue collar to appreciate the awesome majesty of the Biblical narrative, and how it portrays ordinary guys doing extraordinary things in the power of the Spirit (known in the books as the Covering).
The first two books were picked up by a publisher and were pretty straightforward to write. Then life happened.
In the writing of the third book, Song of War, I realized another calling for this series: addressing how God redeems broken men.
As recounted previously on this website, I made many, many mistakes. I accept all responsibility for failing to wisely pursue this vision in its early years.
I also know that God used what I call “the years the locusts have eaten” to grow and mature my ability to tell stories that honor Him.
When I finished the third book, I knew that the fourth one was going to deal with the episode of David and Bathsheba. In many ways, I not only shied away from it, I turned into a full Jonah and ran from it.
